This is the new BMW i8, unveiled this morning at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show. It’s BMW second ‘i’ model (after the i3 city car) and thanks to lightweight carbonfibre construction and a new downsized turbocharged engine, the new i8 is a sports car that offers the performance of an M3 and over 100mpg. It’s more than four years since the Mercedes SLS Gullwing was revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show as the Mercedes replacement for the Mercedes McLaren SLR. And now the SLS is almost at the end of its shelf life. That means the opportunity for a run-out model to cap the SLS range, so Mercedes is launching the Mercedes SLS AMG GT Final Edition – a limited run of 350 cars as a Gullwing or Roadster – which will debut at both the Los Angeles and Tokyo Motor Shows next month.

Mitsubishi will enter the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb – the 92nd running of the prestigious event – with its specially built electric racecar, it announced today. The team finished second and third in the electric class at the 2013 event, and will use the same drivers – former motorcycle class winner, Greg Tracy, and Dakar-rally winner Hiroshi Masuoka – for the 12.42-mile climb to the 14,110ft summit. The bewinged Mitsubishi i-MiEV Evolution III is 4.7m long and 1.9m wide, with an electric motor at each corner to send a total of 600bhp through all four wheels.
